Feb 04 - Our House Records presents: Beats and Bloody's

February 04 2012, Noon - 5:00pm

Our House Records presents: Beats and Bloody's hosted by Noise Pop

Now that Noise Pop's annual festivities are up and running, there's going to be a slew of exciting events and shows throughout the city that you won't want to miss. The Noise Pop-Up Shop has taken claim of the most awesome new event space in town (we're not biased, we swear) at The Bold Italic headquarters for the next few weeks, and they're kicking off their upcoming events with a bang in the form of Bloody Mary's and beats a-plenty. Show up to see live music, dance, get a daytime buzz, grab some eats and donate to charity - funds from admission will be donated to CMAC. Musical acts will include Niteppl, Realboy, Nisus, and Nanosaur, and Noise Pop is suggesting a $5 donation.

View Details

One part solo art show, one part performance showcase, and one part audience participation, Arnold has created a recipe for gratitude in his exhibition. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the installation is intended to make the audience reflect on their own lives, struggles, and thankfulness.

Arnold's multimedia project will open with a provocative live performance showcase and an artist reception, complete with complimentary refreshments and h'ors d'oeuvres galore. The installment will be moved to Art Now SF (3075 17th St.) on February 6th-21st, and will be on view by appointment only. So check it out before it's gone! You can also contact John Felix Arnold III for viewing appointments at 917-543-5261, or email at felixthethird@gmail.com.

View Details

Feb 04 - Radicle Papyrus Showcase by Julia Goodman (free)

February 04 2012, 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Radicle Papyrus Showcase by Julia Goodman hosted by 18 Reasons

free

Julia Goodman's workshop last year, Radicle Papyrus, was an artistic success, and totally proved papermaking an underrated art form. This time, she's presenting her own work to the public, which takes normally average, boring paper to the next level. Goodman makes artisan paper out of beets through an ancient practice of papermaking that results in colorful brilliance. Local sound artist Scott Cazan will accompany the installation, and audience members will get to see Goodman's vibrant handiwork up close and personal.

The exhibition is (amazingly) free, so there are no excuses for missing out.

View Details

Food Stories introduces a discussion of food, literature, and the ways they are interconnected - all while promoting its tagline, "Pleasure is pleasure", in T. C. Boyle's "Sorry Fugu" and Alice McDermott's play, "Enough". The former puts Boyle's satirist reputation to work in a witty analysis of restaurants and critics, and the latter chronicles a woman's life and relationship with food. The event gives its audience what the City knows best - good food and great literature - in a collection of plays, director Q&A, talks from local gourmet experts, art, and a mouthwatering meal, of course.

18 Reasons is asking $65 for members, and $75 for the general public, and admission includes theater tickets and dinner.

Watch the game (but only if the Niners make it, of course) while the guys from SportsSweaters give their always-snarky commentary and sarcastic two-cents. Witty, smart-ass personalities like David Cairns, OJ Patterson, and David Gborie are the commentators for the night, and they are bound to induce some gridiron revelry. The event is a benefit for SF Indiefest and The Roxie Theater, so admission is free but donations are encouraged.

View Details

Good thing Mission art space newcomer, We Are Will Brown, is taking the initiative in hosting such an event, where participants will figure draw local stand-up artists (including George Chen, Rajeev Dhar, Jesse Elias, Chris Garcia, Andrew Holmgren, Sean Keane, Duat Mai, Jessica Sele, Chris Thayer, and Alex White) in the midst of their craft. Quick comedy sketches mean super-speedy art sketches, so you'll have to crank out some masterpieces in record time. We Are Will Brown will provide the chairs, easels, paper, pencils, and booze, so all you need is your artistic ambition (or not, amateurs are encouraged) and a comedic spirit.

View Details

February 07 2012, 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Chai Traditions: History and Taste hosted by 18 Reasons

$35.00

There's a good chance that amount of time accumulated living in San Francisco is directly proportional to one's level of addiction to chai. Anything warm and caffeinated is worshipped in this city, if the amount of coffee and tea shops per square block is any inclination -- and chai is certainly no exception. This explains 18 Reasons' upcoming workshop, Chai Traditions: History and Taste -- part history lesson, part chai-making tutorial, part tasting session. Complete with Indian street food.

Tickets are $25 for 18 Reasons members and $35 for the general public.

February 08 2012, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Seeing Double - The Best of DOUBLEtruck Magazine hosted by San Francisco Arts Commission

free

SFAC will be celebrating the first five years of the critically-acclaimed quarterly magazine, DOUBLEtruck, and will present a collection of 60 of their most iconic, evocative photographs. The gallery will showcase a time capsule of the most notable moments in recent history, from war-torn Iraq to images of Indonesian floods and wreckage. The magazine's focus on photography that "illuminate[s] the human condition", says gallery director Meg Shiffler, makes for a pretty diverse (and sometimes gruesome) account of global suffering, and ups the social justice ante in order to make a positive change. Sounds good to us!

This exhibition featuring world-renowned photojournalists is free and open to the public, and the installment will run until May 18th.

View Details

That's why the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will be hosting a very bike-friendly dating game, Love on Wheels, to try to hook you up with a like-minded lover. Bike-enthused contestants will quiz each other and the winners will score a date paid for by the Coalition, so bring your bicycle know-how and it may be love at first sight.

For the chance to find true love (or just to get some, if that's what you're into), email love@sfbike.org and tell them which way you roll (there's girl-girl, dude-dude, and guy-gal categories). It's 21+, and if you become an SF Bicycle Coalition member at the door you get in free! $5 for members, and $10 for non-members.

View Details

Her work exists in a wide variety of media including photography, sculpture, video, and sound, and often involves whimsical insertions into everyday scenarios, interacting with nature or maps. Her work has been exhibited domestically and internationally at places such as MoMA PS1, New York; the Serpentine Gallery, London; New Langton Arts, San Francisco; Artists Space, New York; SculptureCenter, New York; and the Palais de Tokyo, Paris.

In 2006, the Turku Art Museum in Finland featured a solo show of works made in Finland, and later that year the Tang Museum in Saratoga Springs exhibited a 10-year survey of her work and published an accompanying monograph entitled All Forms of Attraction. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego presented a solo show of her recent video installation works in July 2008. In February 2010, she was the artist-in-residence at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in Dunedin, New Zealand, where she had a solo show entitled Seat Assignment. She is currently at work on a permanent public piece, commissioned by the General Services Administration (GSA), for a border crossing station between the U.S. and Canada. Katchadourian is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.

Since 1969, CAP has been providing resources and exhibition space to artists who might not otherwise have access to them. This exhibition showcases a range of works produced at the CAP throughout our history. “One of the remarkable things I witness on a daily basis is how the artists that use the studio are able to temporarily overcome the hardship they endure to produce outstanding works,” said Ivan Vera, CAP Program Manager. “What I find curious is how when the brain and the hand are focused on the task-at-hand the emphasis shifts from the artist’s day-to-day struggles to a personal appreciation of his or her creative achievements.” Through creativity, adversity dissipates, self-esteem is built, and self-sufficiency is strengthened, key components to Hospitality House’s mission.

This special retrospective spans more than 43 years, featuring works by notable artists throughout the history of the program, including: James Scoville, Jeff Roysdon, Stephen McQueen, Gabriella Bardellini, Pepe, Angel Florentino, Harry Driggs, Rose Linda, Charlotte Redor, Milo Harkness-Smith, Charlene L. Godard, James Irvine Taylor/Jolene Spencer, David Brannam, E. Kolker, Ronnie Goodman, Donald Becerra, Pancho, Esteban Diaz, Charles Blackwell, Sean Desmond, Dedan Bryant, Cadillac Red, Midori Meissen, randalljohn, Elisha Brown, Marsha Campbell, Patti Walker, Janet Williams, Steven Harris, Ronald Barnett, Athena Landmeier, Roya Bozeman, Ruth Altman, and others.

Selections runs from February 9 through April 13 with an artist reception on Thursday, February 9, from 5 to 8 PM. The reception is free and open to the public.

View Details

Feb 09 - Everywhere Man

February 09 2012, 6:00pm

Everywhere Man hosted by Mechanics' Institute Library & Chess Room

Whether you've boarded the San Francisco cable cars a hundred times or brushed them off as a mere tourist trap, you're now invited to learn about a modern mystery story experienced while riding one up Nob Hill.

Member author Jim Nelson has penned Everywhere Man, a high-tech mystery story and audio tour about San Francisco's cable cars.

Readers and tour participants will learn about a stranger haunting millions of tourist photographs that are taken around San Francisco and posted on the Internet, a man whose image quietly frustrates the fabric of the city's digital history. His presence is detected inside a virtual cable car ride funded by an entrepreneur who fancies himself a modern Andrew Hallidie.

Portions of the audio tour will be presented and the author will discuss the process of writing a book designed to be synchronized with a self-guided audio tour.

Everywhere Man was published in October 2011.

We named them “microhoods” without realizing the parties we throw on their behalf would become a new SF tradition. To date, thousands of you have came out to celebrate FolSoMa, Mint Slope, Valencia Bottoms, 3rd Base, ClemenTime and other microhoods with us.

Mid Riff is our latest microhood party. It's happening Thursday, February 9th from 6 pm to 8 pm and is devoted to Market Street between 6th and 7th Street, a part of the city that is home to impressive art spaces, one of the best loved music venues on the West Coat, great restaurants, bars, and shops. A number of inspired businesses and organizations call the intersection of the Tenderloin, Downtown, and SoMa home - building a new 'hood identity and creating a distinctive community known for cutting edge art, music, delicious bites and lovingly crafted cocktails. Co-presented by The Luggage Store, Hospitality House, Camera Works and the San Francisco Arts Commission, Mid Riff is an evening of discounted eats, complimentary libations, special deals, art openings, and live performances. We hope you'll come out to for our first microhood of the new year and enjoy special elements courtesy of Satellite 66 Gallery, Show Dogs, Small Potatoes Catering, Huckleberry Bicycles and other great Mid Riff merchants. In addition, the IIDA and SF Arts Commisions reveal event for The Windows, "a collection of over-the-top, creative, retail window displays created by the San Francisco Bay Area design community" is also happening along Market Street starting at 5:30. Check out our event listing for a rundown of everything that will be happening and don't forget to RSVP.

View Details

Feb 10 - The Truck Show SF, a charity event benefiting Oakland's Visual Element

February 10 2012, 6:30pm - Midnight

The Truck Show SF, a charity event benefiting Oakland's Visual Element hosted by 1:AM

1AM, in collaboration with artists, Optimist and Plantrees, are proud to present “The Truck Show SF”. The exhibit pays homage to the modern box-style delivery truck as an icon of graffiti and also is a charity event to benefit Visual Element, the public arts component of Oakland’s EastSide Art Alliance. Optimist and Plantrees have put together a killer line-up of artists, including infamous Bay Area graffiti writers like Satyr, Jurne and Pemex that have agreed to donate 100% of their proceeds to Visual Element. The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” hope to show that the graffiti writer’s love and respect for the art form is a powerful tool to help fuel and positively influence the next generation by giving back to their community even in a time of financial struggle. The opening reception is on Friday, February 10th, 2012 from 6:30 to 9:30pm and will run through March 4th, 2012.

The organizers of “The Truck Show SF” are excited to partner with Visual Element. We both believe that murals educate, motivate to action, and inspire more creations of beauty. With a wide price range of artwork for sale, everyone interested will be able to take home a piece of graffiti history and support an important cause.

Inspirational imagery includes a man dressed as a sheep, a tank of jellyfish, and a woman lost inside a television set. The director chose the music based on Murakami's references to sound scatted throughout the pages of his works, so you'll hear everything from Secret Agent Man to the sounds of cicadas. This should be interesting.

For this special gathering, we’re focusing on the 6th and Market area, which we’ve playfully tagged Mid Riff, and the art and architecture that surrounds it.

Our featured artist will be Hugh Leeman, who lives at that intersection and whose amazing portraits of his neighbors on the street have been wheatpasted around the city. We’ll also be highlighting some of the musical and cultural history associated with the unique space hosting the dinner, a private residence rarely open to the public.

Peter Godwin’s The Fear chronicles the violence, suffering and chaos of his native Zimbabwe under the rule of Robert Mugabe. In Peter Orner’s Hope Deferred, Zimbabweans recount their experiences of losing their homes, land, livelihoods and families as a direct result of political violence. Godwin and Orner join in a discussion about the astonishing courage and resilience of a people who challenged a violent dictatorship, and the power of story telling to fight tyranny.

“[The Fear is] a document that should be read by anyone interested in the sacrifices that people are willing to make for the sake of democracy.” – The New York Times

“Hope Deferred might be the most important publication to have come out of Zimbabwe in the past thirty years.” – Alexandra Fuller, Harper’s Magazine

Feb 13 - Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Dora García

February 13 2012, 7:30pm

Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Dora García hosted by San Francisco Art Institute

The central motif of renowned Spanish artist Dora García's work is the analysis of the paradigms and conventions of art. She often uses texts and stories as a basis for scenarios that, while witty and entertaining, raise complex ethical and moral questions. Her projects invoke problematic sources such as Abbie Hoffman’s 1970 Steal this Book, Lenny Bruce’s incendiary stand up comedy, and the films of legendary underground filmmaker Jack Smith.

García studied at the University of Salamanca and at the Rijksakademie of Amsterdam, and has had solo exhibitions in Spain and abroad at MACBA, Barcelona; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; MUSAC, León, Spain; SMAK, Gante, Belgium; GfZK, Leipzig, Germany; CGAC, Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Galeria Civica di Trento, Italy; Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland; and Index Stockholm. She has participated in prestigious international exhibitions including Manifesta 2, the 8th Istanbul Biennial, 17th Biennale of Sydney; Xe Biennale of Lyon; 2nd Athens Biennale; 29th Bienal de São Paulo; and the 2011 Venice Biennale, where she represented her home country of Spain. Her work will be included in Descriptive Acts, a media arts exhibition at SFMOMA, which runs from February through June of this year.

Feb 14 - Nathan Englander ($10.00)

A regular contributor to the New Yorker, Nathan Englander won the PEN/Malamud award for his first collection, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, an international bestseller. Of his first novel, The Ministry of Special Cases, the New York Times wrote, “one reads this novel in awe of Englander's talent.” His play, The Twenty-Seventh Man, based on a story from his first book, will premiere at New York’s The Public Theater this year. He joins us to discuss his new book, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, eight short stories that grapple with the great questions of modern life. The title story, inspired by Raymond Carver’s masterpiece, is a provocative portrait of two marriages in which the Holocaust is played out as a devastating parlor game.

Having been formed by bandleader-singer-guitarist Ethan Miller in 2004, as a melodic offshoot of blazing new-psych innovators Comets On Fire, Howlin Rain soon caught the attention of uber-producer Rick Rubin, who signed them to his American Recordings label and involved himself deeply in their subsequent musical evolution thereafter. Rubin worked closely with Ethan for over a year and a half as he shaped and perfected the material being written for The Russian Wilds. Finally, the band entered the studio with producer-engineer Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses), tracking at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, as well as at Trilogy Studios and Hyde Street in San Francisco, recording most of the overdubs at Green’s Louder Studios in SF, where Tim mixed the album with crucial input from Rick.

Our very own The Bold Italic Producer and Found Local, Jennifer Maerz, will be reading at the event -- as well as readings performed by the talented Bob Calhoun, Parker Gibbs, Jon Ginoli, Penelope Houston, Carletta Sue Kay, Erin McDermott, Joshua Mohr, and Joel Selvin.

Countless varieties of plants and animals were bred by the world's peoples for talents specific to every soil, climate, and human culture. Most of them have been lost---their hard-won genetic sophistication extinguished. But many have survived, thanks to professional and amateur devotion, and they are wondrous---living embodiments of humanity's deepest traditions.

Photojournalist Jim Richardson has been covering the agricultural beat for National Geographic since 1984. His spectacular photographs, and the stories he tells with them, are renowned.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra was initially conceived by New Zealand native, Ruban Neilson, who pieced the band together with skilled producer, Jake, on bass and a brilliant teenage drummer named Julien to fill out the band. They bring break-beats together with 60’s/70’s Beatles sounding pop harmonies and a minimal Krautrock rhythm section.

Pioneers in San Francisco for offering free musical performances from some of the most talked about new names on the music circuit in non-traditional music venues, CLIFT Hotel and IAMSOUND Records will continue to host CLIFT Sessions through the new year in the iconic Redwood Room and Velvet Room.

50 years after his groundbreaking solo exhibit at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Ron Garrigues honors Varnish Fine Art with a retrospective spanning the last quarter century of creative endeavor.

Varnish Fine Art presents a retrospective solo exhibition of the past 33 years of artwork by Ron Garrigues. “From Beginning to End” features 33 bronze sculptures (Man and Beast Series), 33 etchings on clayboard (the Big Bang Series) and 33 sumi ink paintings mounted on silk (the Next One Billion Humans 2025 AD Series). Ron Garrigues resonates with the concerns of 21st Century Mankind, using his art as a vehicle to bear witness to the beginning (the Big Bang) and as a foretelling of a possible end for Man and Nature.

Ron Garrigues first gained critical acclaim in the art world with his 1961 solo exhibit of sculpture at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Referencing sculptural skills gained under the tutelage of Richard Whalen, Peter Voulkos and Harold Paris and influenced by the poetics of late 1950’s Beat culture in North Beach, Garrigues explored what he describes as “the lyric purity of form and line.”

He trekked around the world, exploring rainforests, climbing the Andes, Himalayas, Alps and the Sierra Nevada, all the while recording the impact of “Man” on “Nature.” His observations on extinction, overpopulation and greed in the new millenium form the basis of his art while retaining a commitment to the beauty of form. Sublime tension, particularly in Garrigues’ series of bronze skulls, engages the viewer on a visceral level, driving his message home.

Since 2007, Garrigues has turned his attention to the second dimension, using clayboard and traditional sumi ink materials to address concerns about the number of humans occupying the planet Earth and the sustainability, or lack thereof, of this unmitigated population explosion.

“Beauty works for Garrigues… It serves him, and serves his message, and he has got something very serious to say. We can only hope that he is heard.” – Thomas Berry (1914-2009)

Their most recent film, the award-winning Something Ventured (2011), premiered at SXSW in March, and is slated for broadcast as well as educational distribution worldwide. Geller and Goldfine’s work also includes Ballets Russes (2005), which appeared on a dozen critical “10 Best Films” lists, including those of Time Magazine and the Los Angeles Times; Now and Then: From Frosh to Seniors (1999), which aired on PBS as the lead program of the Independent Lens series; Kids of Survival: The Art and Life of Tim Rollins + K.O.S. (1996), which received two national Emmy Awards; FROSH: Nine Months in a Freshman Dorm (1994); and Isadora Duncan: Movement from the Soul (1988). Geller and Goldfine are currently in post-production on Satan Came to Eden: The Galapagos Affair, a murder mystery documentary set in the Galapagos Islands circa the 1930s.

View Details

Mar 08 - Living in Studio Kuchar

March 08 2012, 5:30pm - 6:00pm

Living in Studio Kuchar hosted by San Francisco Art Institute

Living in Studio Kuchar highlights the inimitable genius of independent film legend and SFAI faculty member George Kuchar, who died in September 2011. Coinciding with the exhibition, a campus-wide special event, SFAI Celebrates the Life and Work of George Kuchar, will follow the opening reception on March 8.

Kuchar’s wildly original vision—tawdry yet tender, perversely humorous, and deeply personal—fueled a body of work spanning more than 200 films and videos, as well as paintings, drawings, comics, and writing. Beloved by generations of students, Kuchar had taught at the San Francisco Art Institute since 1971, where he and his students in “AC/DC Psychotronic Teleplays” and the sequel course “Electro-graphic Sinema” made melodrama parodies with minuscule budgets and remarkable spirit.

This exhibition will situate Kuchar’s work in the specific locale and community of SFAI, which for four decades served not just as a workplace, but as a site of experimentation and collaboration; a network of students, filmmakers, and friends; and his emotional home. With a gallery design featuring props from films as well as personal memorabilia, the exhibition will highlight seminal films such as Hold Me While I'm Naked, class films made with SFAI students, selections from the long-running project “Weather Diaries” (including his last, rarely seen, video Hot Spell), and drawings and comics.
Born in New York in 1942, Kuchar began making 8mm movies in the 1950s with his twin brother, Mike. They soon became central to the underground, avant-garde film scene, screening work alongside Andy Warhol, Kenneth Anger, and Stan Brakhage. Notable films include Sins of the Fleshapoids (1965); Hold Me While I'm Naked (1966), ranked as one of the 100 Best Films of the 20th Century by the Village Voice; and the notorious Thundercrack! (1975), which George made with longtime collaborator Curt McDowell. Called “legends in the world of experimental film” by Roger Ebert, the Kuchars have influenced filmmakers including Todd Solondz, Gus Van Sant, David Lynch, Brian De Palma, and John Waters, and theorist Gene Youngblood named George one of the great artists in the history of the moving image.

Kuchar's film and video work has screened around the globe in cinemas, festivals, and major museums. Recent honors include the exhibition George Kuchar: Pagan Rhapsodies at MoMA PS1 in New York; the addition of his 1977 short film I, An Actress to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry; and his selection for the 2012 Whitney Biennial, to be held March 1 though May 27, 2012 at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

View Details

De Botton, a non-believer himself, offers a surprisingly useful look at religion for atheists as the source of best practices for living and arranging our societies, building communities and sustaining relationships.

“He writes with an elegance philosophers might envy...We're painlessly instructed while we read for fun.”

Mar 28 - Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Jim Isermann

March 28 2012, 7:30pm

Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Jim Isermann hosted by San Francisco Art Institute

Jim Isermann is an artist based in Palm Springs, California. Since receiving his MFA from the California Institute of Arts in 1980, Isermann's artistic output has chronicled the conflation of post-war industrial design and fine art through popular culture. His functional installations reclaim a utopian view of the future while revealing the pathos of that failed project, and have maintained an unflagging belief in the beauty of utilitarian design. Throughout the 1990s Isermann explored traditional handicraft techniques (e.g stained glass, weaving), producing works that are unashamedly beautiful; a beauty that is integral to the limitations and specific characteristics of fabrication. In 1998, following a 15-year survey exhibition at the University of Wisconsin’s Institute of Visual Arts, Isermann began to use a computer to design manufactured elements. Since then, his realized installations and commissions have employed mass-produced thermal die-cut vinyl decals, plotter-cut Mylar, ContraVision© ink jet printed vinyl, and vacuum-formed ABS plastic panels. In 2003, a 35-foot chandelier, custom carpeting, and furniture were permanently installed in the atrium of Genentech Hall at the UCSF Mission Bay Campus in San Francisco.

Currently, Isermann divides his practice between producing labor-intensive studio work for gallery and museum exhibitions, and designing and overseeing commissioned projects that involve industrial manufacturing processes. Most recently Isermann has mounted solo exhibitions at Deitch Projects, New York; Corvi-Mora, London; and Richard Telles Fine Art, Los Angeles. He has completed commissioned projects for the Hammer Museum at UCLA, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Yale University Art Museum, Princeton University, Stanford University, and University of California, Riverside, where he is a Professor in the Department of Art.

Apr 02 - Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Nato Thompson

April 02 2012, 7:30pm

Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Nato Thompson hosted by San Francisco Art Institute

In this talk, curator Nato Thompson pulls from his recently published book, Seeing Power: Art and Activism in the Age of Cultural Production (Melville House, 2012), to discuss the work of some of the most interesting artists and activists working today. He evaluates sites and institutions that empower their communities to see power and re-imagine it. From cooperative housing to anarchist infoshops to alternative art venues, Thompson shows that many of today’s most innovative spaces operate as sites of dramatic personal transformation.

Since January 2007, Nato Thompson has been chief curator at Creative Time, organizing projects such as Democracy in America: The National Campaign (2008), Paul Chan’s acclaimed Waiting for Godot in New Orleans (2007), and Mike Nelson’s A Psychic Vacuum. Prior to Creative Time, he worked as Curator at MASS MoCA where he completed numerous large-scale exhibitions such as The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere (2004), a survey of political art of the 1990s with a catalogue distributed by MIT Press. His writings have appeared in numerous publications including BookForum, Art Journal, tema celeste, Parkett, Cabinet, and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest. In Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16, Moshe Kasher finds humor in very strange places. A standup comedian and regular guest on Chelsea Lately, Kasher tells of the surreal experience of being raised by deaf parents, life as a Jewish boy in predominantly African-American Oakland, and his whirlwind tour of drug addiction, gangs and lockdown. The result is a hilarious childhood memoir that’s part Augusten Burroughs, part David Sedaris and a dash of Jim Carroll.

“Out of all the hip-hop Jewish kids I know with deaf Orthodox parents, Kasher is the funniest. This book is thoughtful, touching, a bit harrowing and hilarious.” – Marc Maron, comedian and host of the WTF podcast

TYPO San Francisco brings together incredible speakers from both European and American design communities to share their work and insights on what it means to connect.

View Details

Apr 11 - Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Wayne Koestenbaum

April 11 2012, 7:30pm

Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series: Wayne Koestenbaum hosted by San Francisco Art Institute

Poet and cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum consistently filters cultural icons through an incisively quirky, highly personal filter. His latest book, The Anatomy of Harpo Marx (UC Press, 2012), is a luxuriant, detailed play-by-play account of Harpo Marx's physical movements as captured on screen. In the book, Koestenbaum addresses the thirteen Marx Brothers films, from The Cocoanuts in 1929 to Love Happy in 1950, to focus on Harpo's chief and yet heretofore unexplored attribute—his profound and contradictory corporeality. Koestenbaum celebrates the astonishing range of Harpo's body—its kinks, sexual multiplicities, somnolence, Jewishness, "cute" pathos, and more. Koestenbaum's text moves gracefully from insightful analysis to cultural critique to autobiographical musing, and provides Harpo with a host of odd bedfellows, including Walter Benjamin and Barbra Streisand.

Wayne Koestenbaum has published numerous books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, including Humiliation (Picador, 2011); Hotel Theory (Soft Skull Press, 2007); Best-Selling Jewish Porn Films (Turtle Point Press, 2006); and The Queen's Throat: Opera, Homosexuality, and the Mystery of Desire (Poseidon, 1993). A graduate of Harvard and Princeton, he is a distinguished professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and also a visiting professor in the painting department of the Yale School of Art.

This lecture will be followed by a book signing.

The short stories of Israeli writer Etgar Keret (The Nimrod Flipout, Girl on the Fridge) are among the more unusual pleasures in contemporary fiction. They really are short, rarely longer than two or three pages, and while writers from Keret's land are supposed always to be dealing with Serious Things, Keret's characters are more likely to be found playing cards with dwarfs, getting stuck onto ceilings with Superglue, or finding miniature zippers in their lover’s mouths. Michael Chabon hosts.

As critic Morgan Falconer describes, “Eggerer fuses abstraction and figuration in paintings, drawings and collages which frequently feature strong architectural elements and groups of figures. These figures appear to happily inhabit very sunny, modern times; yet his broadly applied, often candied palette tends to wrench them from their moorings, leaving them floating, as if disembodies, across screens of colour.” In the mid-1990s, he collaborated with classmate Jochen Klein on a series of conceptually oriented projects dealing with questions of identity and public space. After moving to New York, Eggerer joined the artists’ collective Group Material.
